lunar landscapes (lunarscapes?)

OK, so I finally have been getting regular bench time. Sort of. I am trying for once a week - on Thursday nights. And then TRYING to also get some time each weekend. It's just really challenging - as Duane said over here to get things done with kids.

anyway, let's see what I have to share...........

these are all brooches. I also have a pendant and a ring in the same theme as most of these but don't have the photos handy. Will update tonight.

So the brooches: thinking back to several pieces I did a couple of years ago (will link to those later)

This one doesn't quite live up to the older ones:

But this one comes much closer.

then I took a little detour for some flush setting, and trying new pin stem/catch combinations - fabricating them all..

then back to the lunarscape.....with a post pin. (I use a large rubber ear back as the 'catch' on these kind, it's sort of just like making a post earring but really sharp on the end)

So there you have it.

Hammer Handpiece v. Pnuematic Engraver

Ok, lets see who is still around besides Bentiron.

We are currently debating adding a hammer hand piece to our flex shaft for some stone setting, but the other though is to get one of the pneumatic engraver systems GRS Graversmith, Lindsey AirGraver, or Enset with the hope of doing more engraving as decoration.

Sure there is a significant cost difference, but having not seen a hammer handpiece in use, and there being plenty of videos of the engraver systems online, I wonder if the hammer handpiece has control issues.

-Duane

Retreat 2012

So retreat 2012 is just days away!!! I am so excited! I wish all of you could come. Maybe SOME of you next year????? Start thinking about it now! Always in October, first half of the month.

I have left EVERYthing to the last minute this year (do I say that every year? I'm not sure) so the next day and a half is going to be nuts. I have to laundry before I can pack and I need to do all the normal stuff - pack bench, supplies, go to bank, library (want book on tape for the drive), grocery shop for family, make sure son's school stuff is all in order, medical note, etc. . . . . and want to drop by hospital and visit the new grand before I leave......

how to do it all?

I always wonder that, but somehow it always gets done.

This year I am planning to blog my way through retreat, including some videos. not enough to take away from my 'down time' because I really DO need this get away time, but enough that you all can get a glimpse into it.

more later!

Stone setting in tight spaces

Hi,

I am trying to make this pendant. As you can see, the area that the bezel sits in is quite tight. I used a handmade tapered bezel pusher to set the stone, which I made quite a mess of because it was not able to get at the bezel at the right angle. I ended up more pulling the bezel over the stone then trying to hammer it down tight from a 90° angle. I poked around trying to burnish the edges smoother and the stone popped out.

Any idea how to set a stone in such a small space other than epoxy?

Thanks

kitsch

Prasiolite Pendant

I took a class with the amazing Tom Herman and finally go around to trying the techniques I learned in his class (chasing and engraving). I combined that with my previous custom setting for a large stone and came up with this.

http://www.jewelryartistsnetwork.com/community/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=8131

http://www.jewelryartistsnetwork.com/community/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=8132

This piece was made for a challenge - Back to Back
I had already done the little aventurine cabachon so I decided to do one the same in rose quartz. Then bezel set them back to back in sterling silver.
The finish is not all it should be but I am reasonably happy with what I have done. I have an idea on how to do a swivel bail for the next one I try.
