Jewellery and beads

Its been a pretty crazy couple of weeks, having been away for easter we came home only for me to go away again, this time I was heading off without the kids and without DH, not something I EVER do. I went to the Flame Off, a British glassy convention with lots of glass sellers and lots of demos from both home grown and international artists, it was amazing, i learnt so much in a tiny amount of time.
Part of the problem for me about learning something new is that I am a bit like a headless chicken when I get back to my bench, not really knowing what to make or try out first. Thankfully I came home to some orders which allowed me to keep some focus. Yesterday was awful, I didn't know what to make and felt that everything I produced was a bit rubbish, However, when I opened my kiln this morning, there sat a set of beads that I completely LOVE, I cant explain why, they are a not terribly complex but they make me happy, of course I couldn't wait to make them into something so I made this necklace:
Safari necklace4 by soulsilver1, on Flickr
http://www.flickr.com/photos/52232497@N02/...in/photostream/

Safari necklace3 by soulsilver1, on Flickr

One of the orders I had was for a set of eight fairies, I love the shot of them all together so thought I would share that too

Fairy Collective by soulsilver1, on Flickr

Easter

We didn't dye eggs this year or do ANYthing creative. At all. Very uncharacteristic for us. Barely even got a basket of candy with a small gift made. Events of the past year really seem to have thrown me totally off.

I traveled to DE for easter- to my folks house, had a very nice relaxing weekend. Attended their church on Sunday which was nice. I hadn't been yet. It's smaller that what I'm used to but it's the same denomination so very familiar in a way. . . had a nice Easter/Sunday dinner early in the day - a little different than usual - ham, sweet potatoes, 'frosted' cauliflower, roll. weird. usually we have asparagus and some other stuff. I think we're all a little off with the events of the past year. Just getting acclimated to new ways of being I guess .

I saw a really interesting recipe for a meringue cookie that is meant to be a cooking project to do with your kids at Easter - found it too late to do it, but I bookmarked it for next year. Each step has a correlating bible verse, like you crush nuts and talk about how Jesus was bruised and crushed, and so on. I plan to have my act back together next year and do this with my son.

I didn't even take a family photo this year!

I did get a few of the kids and the furfaced ones. (attaching.....)

So what did everyone else do? Do you dye, hide, and hunt eggs? Did you make anything creative - like Ellie?

What's a typical Easter dinner at your place?

Or do you not observe Easter at all?

Chalcedony - tips for cutting?

Of course any time you start a new hobby you see **GREAT DEALS** that you have to take advantage of. That being said, I have small pieces of beautiful Chalcedony and also small pieces of fire agate. My question is - how do you know where to cut to get slices? How do you know what's inside and, particularly with the fire agate, what direction you need to cut in to get the whole matrix to show up? And with the chalcedony, how not to have it crumble to bits.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I can find all kinds of info on the rocks themselves, but nothing on cutting.

thanks!

Broken Rolling Mill

HELP!!!! I have an economy rolling mill, relatively new, that is not working properly. Anyone know where I could have it repaired. I'm not even sure who I could call. Spoke with Harbor Freight in 2 locations close to me thinking they may know a repair person....no luck. Would certainly appreciate suggestions. It's time like this that I miss my dad even more than usual. If he couldn't fix it, he would have known who to call.

Faster Finishing methods

I am starting to spend more time at my bench and have realized that I spend a lot of time on finishing my pieces during the pre-polish phase. I'm pretty fanatical about finishing and tend to hand sand through progressive grits. Problem with that is it is so time consuming.

I have some split mandrels and I throw sandpaper on those occasionally and go to town but they're really a bit of a pain to use. I have some of Rio's silicone (I think) AdvantEdge polishers and they work well but even the coarsest one isn't coarse enough for what I need sometimes. (I don't always store my metal well so it frequently ends up scratched right from the get go.)

I know there are a million different products out there. What does everyone use that they really like? Any products you've tried that you wouldn't buy again? Any tips for saving time?

Thanks in advance.

I MADE IT

A very dear friend gave me a Dremel Engraver and I wanted to see if I could use it to set stones like Janice does in silver. It works like a mini jack hammer with the up and down motion soooo I sanded the tip off rounded it and sanded it smooth and shiny. It works like a charm. I will now pat myself on the back LOL :mind- blowing:
